In Response To Apple Restrictions, Kobo Releasing HTML5 App

After being forced to remove the bookstore from its iOS app, Kobo has begun working on a web-based HTML5 app to be released later this year.

“I would expect to have the HTML5 app complement the iPhone and iPad apps and provide some of the functionality that’s no longer available,” Dan Leibu, Kobo’s chief technology officer, told us. He did not specify when the app will be released.

In releasing an app that gets around Apple’s restrictions, Kobo is following in the footsteps of companies like the Financial Times, which launched its own HTML5 app last month. Expect ymore companies—perhaps Nook and Kindle, who also had to remove bookstores from their apps yesterday—to do the same.
