Mini fastest moving Automotive brand online

Last week we released our second quarterly Automotive report which includes the latest online trends of manufacturers, dealerships, classifieds and motor insurance. The stand out performer this quarter was Mini, which was the fastest mover in our Automotive Brand Index.

The Index monitors the top branded searches for manufacturers and car models and benchmarks the top brands against one another.

This quarter Mini was the eighth biggest auto manufacturing brand in the UK, up four places from 12th last quarter and up from 13th place last year. Mini accounted for 3.85% of branded automotive searches this quarter, and registered 12,514 new vehicles according to The Society of Motor Manufactures and Traders (SMMT), 500 more new vehicles than last quarter. Jaguar also had a strong quarter breaking into the top 20 for the first time.

At the top of the Index, the top two brands were very closely matched with Ford just edging the lead away from Volkswagen. Ford accounted for 10.70% of all branded searches whereas Volkswagen accounted for 10.62%. As you can see, the margins between first and second were very narrow indeed.

It’s interesting to see which models are the big drivers of traffic for these brands. For Ford, the most searched for model is the Focus, with 15.65% of all Ford searches conducted in the 12 weeks ending 25 June 2011 containing the word ‘focus’.

For Volkswagen the Golf is the clear market leader in terms of online searches, with 11.40% of searches including the word ‘golf’ with other models including the Polo, Passat and Beetle also being very popular.

With the top two being so close, it wouldn’t take much for Volkswagen to overtake Ford, especially if search volumes increased for Golfs and search demand decreased for the Focus. We’ll be monitoring the changes online as they happen and watching for the latest search trends in the Automotive industry.
