“A Nielsen Scarborough study measured U.S. newspaper readership and found that more than 169 million adults read a newspaper in print, on a Web site or on a mobile app in a month in 2016.

In total, newspapers reach 69% of the U.S. population each month.”

Shocker: Newspaper advertising is up

“Here’s something you rarely hear these days: It was a great quarter for newspaper advertising.

Yes, you read that correctly.

The long-struggling medium, which has seen ad revenue fall by half over the past decade as digital soared, recorded stellar gains during third quarter of this year, thanks to big increases in ad spending by two key categories.

In fact, a particularly strong September by newspapers even helped overall ad spending grow 6 percent last month, according to the latest report from Standard Media Index, which tracks ad spending on the part of 80 percent of U.S. agencies.

Newspaper ad spending jumped 18 percent in September, and was up 16 percent for the quarter.

Perhaps most notable, these numbers include only newspapers’ print editions, though newspapers’ digital advertising also grew during third quarter, up 10 percent.”

The digital audience engaged with newspaper content reached a new peak in March 2015, totaling 176 million adult unique visitors. The count is a 10% increase from the 161 million unique visitors measured by comScore in March 2014.”

Scripps ‘Learning Quickly’ On Digital Sales

There are no half measures in digital sales for The E.W. Scripps Company, where the game plan calls for aggressive offense and deep, long-range investment.

The company has been hiring digital-only reps at a rate of about 75 a year, sellers who may not bring with them a book of business but must be uniquely hungry and able to adopt a longer-term sales approach with SMB clients.

It is also offering a widening suite of digital marketing services with mobile and video taking on growing importance among its product offerings.

Looking longer down the line, Scripps is investing heavily in consumer data. The company is growing more sophisticated about collecting and using that data to customize the interactive experiences between users and advertisers.”

FSIs Still Holding Strong For Newspapers

As the push to digitalize many aspects of traditional print media continues, the free-standing insert, or preprint, is holding steady in its original form.

Free-standing inserts (or FSIs), which include coupons and retailers’ circulars, have historically made up 35% to 40% of newspaper annual advertising revenue, according to Nancy Lane, president of the Local Media Association, and that doesn’t appear to be changing.”
